I was born in Austria , went to High school there. After that I was a Policeman In the Palestine Police Force ( British Mandate ). During the war I worked for the Britsh Navy. Later I was with rhe Israeli Bus Cooperative. After my retirement at age 65 , I started to work as an aircourier , which llowed me to seethe whole world. That brings me back to the reason I write this comment. with the exception of the Manchester Guardian and dke Suedeeutsche Zeitung I could not Find an objective Newspaper. Every Sunday people of various organisations were marching thru the main streets. Even our litte Jewish organisation was marching with a big blue-white flag.my favorite teacher in highschool had as read classic and modern literature - but instead of reciting he had us express our imression. unfotunately that cost him his job. he was suspended for not following instructions. But after the Nazis took over Ausria he was made head of the school ,not fo his knlowledge but because he was suspended. if he would refuse it might mean concentration camp. I was in Palestine and when the British left the Arab part of Haia fled to the rab city of Akko and to Libanon which was just left by the French. Iwent we the Haganah volonteers into some buildig to pervent being occupied an looted by new Rumanians. I just remembered how I left Austria.while I was in the British Police An Arab his name was Arab Deek was with me.He had a house at the beginning of the quarter.
I feel as if I lost a very loved uncle. I remember in the 60s that Walter's news broadcast was the only one we watched.
We will all miss that voice and that very comforting face we used to turn to when times were rough. There will never be another like him.
God Bless you, Walter.
